College Counseling
I cater my counseling & tutoring to the student’s and the family’s needs. I keep my program flexible as some students need more work in math or only the harder math, in vocabulary or just in the readings, in reading speed or retaining information, whether to take the SAT/ACT, in remembering grammar or learning it for the first time, essay editing or brainstorming essay ideas, college lists, etc.
I meet with freshmen/sophomores pretty infrequently, if at all — just to get them on the right track with classes, help with vocabulary, how to possibly bulk up their community service or leadership skills, and particularly if they might have any learning disabilities. I meet with juniors more often, specifically to help them with studying/test-taking strategies for their PSAT/SAT/ACT. I also like to get their timeline started for the following 2 years prior to college. With seniors, I really like to work with them the summer before their senior year to help with their last round of testing as well as to begin the college application process: solidify their college list with “back-ups,†“target†schools, and “reaches,†finish drafts of their personal statements, start with the actual online applications, etc. I of course then spend a predominant amount of time with my senior students in the fall helping them with their applications.
